volunteering

A successful co-operative involves leadership and management.  Co-op members should understand that positions of responsibility will need to be filled by members.  Members should also understand that all decisions with regard to the co-operative' s function will be the responsibility of the co-op as a whole.

* Members are expected to attend monthly general membership meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM),
* Members are expected to participate regularly in AT LEAST one committee. Generally, this means approximately four hours of volunteer time per household, per month.

THE COMMITTEES

Riverdale Housing Co-operative has a number of different committees and task forces that play a vital role in the operation of the co-op. Below is a list of some of the committees that Members can be involved in.

Board of Directors

Objectives of the Board of Directors shall be to ensure that the business of the co-op is carried out. The Board of Directors shall be responsible for the day to day operations of the co-op, the supervision of the activities of the co-op, entering into any contracts on behalf of the co-op, and developing and maintaining the co-ops' records.

Membership Committee
This committee has the job of conducting Prospective Members’ Orientations, reviewing and assessing applications for membership in the co-op, and for ensuring that all Units of the co-op are occupied. The Membership Committee also works with the Members to ensure that everyone is volunteering in some way, shape or form and contributing to our co-op. A representative contacts each new Member shortly after move-in to let them know what opportunities are available, and to hopefully find a good fit.

The Dispute Resolution Sub-Committee
This committee mediates disputes among Members, or between Members and committees. It tries to anticipate problems before they arise and provide resolution.

Maintenance Committee
This committee oversees the required maintenance of the Co-op. While Co-op Members ARE responsible for their individual Units, this committee must oversee major maintenance issues (such as replacement of water heaters, roof replacement). The Maintenance Committee works to see that quotes are collected, a competent Contractor is selected, etc. ensuring that work gets done here at the co-op.

Finance Committee
The Finance Committee assists the Treasurer by reviewing monthly financial reports and sitting on ad-hoc committees studying financial policies and procedures. They also help to prepare the annual budget which is presented to and approved by the Membership. Finally the Finance Committee calculates the Housing Charge each year according to the Housing Charge Calculation and Collection policy.

Bylaw Committee

This committee is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the co-op's bylaws, which is the set of rules that guide its operations and activities.

External Committee

This committee is responsible for developing, recommending, and following up on decisions regarding relations with other co-operative and community organisations.  Specifically, this includes developing relations with CHF, 3rd Sector, Riverdale Community League, and Rooftops Canada Foundation.
